Vascular Disease

Risk Factors for Vascular Disease

Risk factors you can control:

  • High blood pressure (hypertension)
  • High blood cholesterol (dyslipidemia)
  • Diabetes
  • Being overweight
  • Excessive alcohol consumption
  • Physical inactivity
  • Poor eating habits
  • Smoking
  • Stress

Risk factors you cannot control:

  • Age: risk increases as you age
  • Gender: women after menopause have a higher risk than before menopause
  • Family history: if you've had a parent or sibling who has had a stroke or heart attack you are at increased risk
  • Ethnicity: adults of Aboriginal, African or South Asian descent are at greater risk

9 in 10 Canadians over the age of 20 have at least one risk factor for vascular disease, and 1 in 3 have more than one risk factor.
